Márton Vizkelety
What is life? For scientist and biotech entrepreneur Gyula Dékány, this question has guided a lifelong quest for discovery; from synthesizing human milk now used in nutritional products worldwide to creating a compound with the potential to treat Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
Dékány’s extraordinary journey - from a small, impoverished village to the heights of the biotech industry - is as inspiring as it is human. For over 20 years, he has lived between Europe and Australia, often separated from his family, relentlessly pursuing scientific progress. The film follows him through one of his most significant milestones: the historic moment when his team successfully synthesizes a few grams of GM1 gangliosides for the first time in history, a breakthrough that could change the future of neurodegenerative disease treatment.
Beyond the science, the film explores the complex relationship between research and business and how financial interests and global crises, from COVID to the war in Ukraine, shape the course of innovation. We also witness deeply personal moments, including the last months of Gyula’s mother’s life as she battled Alzheimer’s, revealing the profound intersection of his work and private life.
Visually inspired by Gyula’s image-driven, philosophical way of thinking, the film offers a scientific experience, interweaving discovery, sacrifice, and the human spirit. It is both a portrait of a brilliant scientist and a meditation on ambition, family, and the price of turning ideas into hope for millions.
